COURSE KEY
Parents of college-bound students interested in the state's financial assistance need to recognize important details in the course criteria, weighting, and administrative procedures for college prep, honors, advanced placement, and dual credit courses. There is a difference in credit weighting between college prep, honors, advanced placement, and dual credit courses. The following screenshot, taken from the 2017 version of South Carolina’s Uniform Grading Policy, demonstrates this difference.

The 2017 version of South Carolina’s Uniform Grading Policy is based on a 10-point grading system. The grading system was revised in 2016 from a 7-point grading system to a 10-point grading system. Therefore, all courses taken during the 2015-2016 school year and prior must use the 7-point scale. After which, courses taken during the 2016-2017 school year and later must use the 10-point scale.
Caution: Some copies of the 7-point grading system may be floating around on the Internet. Be sure you have the latest information provided through the SCDOE website. Links to updated versions of the Uniform Grading Policy are maintained in the SC Uniform Grading Policy section of Record-Keeping Insights.
Credit weighting between college prep, honors, advanced placement, and dual credit courses is explained further in the Course Key section of Record-Keeping Insights. See also the Dual Enrollment section located in the list of links to the right of this section.
